At 10.30 on a Sunday morning, throughout the year, the children of the family of the Martyrs head up Westcotes Drive to join in their own Church activities. These take place in the church hall and cater for children from age 3 to teenagers.
The crèche is held in the Prayer vestry in Church and provides care and fun for babies and toddlers up to the age of 3. It is intended to be not only an enjoyable time for the children but also a safe place where parents can either stay with or leave their children, giving them an opportunity to join in with the worship without the distractions of a small person. For those parents who choose to stay with their babies, the main parts of the service are shown on a screen in the vestry.
Rockets is the group for 3-6/7 year olds. About 12 children attend each week and they learn about God and share his love through stories, activities, crafts, singing, drama and play. A 5 year old Rocket said “I like learning about Jesus, playing and putting money in the pot”
Explorers are aged 7-10 and they are also developing their knowledge of God through a variety of activities. There are about 12 children attending each week and the sessions are lively and fun, but at the same time, informative and thought provoking. An 8 year old Explorer said:” I like the fun games and Explorers helps me to learn about God”.
Fuel Cells is the 11-14 group which again has around 12 members. The young people in this group are beginning to explore Christianity in a deeper way. They have a strong group identity and spend time in social activities with each other as well as attending the Sunday Club.
On the first Sunday in the month, the young people stay in church for an all age service. This enables the whole family of the church to worship together and the service is designed to engage children and adults alike.
On the third Sunday of the month, we also start all together in church for a short time of praise and worship and then Rockets and Explorers go out to the hall for a combined time of creative and interactive learning in “Lift Off”. After a few more teenage-friendly songs in church the Fuel Cells also then go out for their own time of learning.
All of the Sunday Clubs are led and supported by a wonderful group of Church members who give their time and energy to ensure that our children and young people receive a strong foundation on which to build their Christian lives. We not only have adult members of the congregation but also teenagers who show great enthusiasm and commitment and to whom the children relate in a very positive way.
